Abstrak

An Old Fashioned Girl is chosen as the object in doing analysis because the novel tells about fashion as a social status in Boston society. The objective of this study is to describe about fashion as a social status in the Boston society that conveyed by the author through her work An Old Fashioned Girl novel. The researcher particularly discusses fashion as a social status as the main theme in this analysis. The researcher applied cultural study approach in order to help the researcher in analyzing and determining this analysis, because fashion is related to the culture. Descriptive qualitative was used to elaborate the data that has the correlation to the problem statement. The researcher limited the analysis only on the fashion as a social status of dress and accessories (hat) for women in the Boston society. The data were narrations and dialogues in the novel An Old Fashioned Girl as the data source. It focused on fashion as a social status inside the novel. As the result of the analysis, the researcher concluded that fashion can be used to show the position or rank of someone in the society or community. Someone who in the upper class position usually wears the dress or gown made by silk. It makes them different from the other classes.
