Abstrak

Two types of language were looked at in relation to memory for object locations in this study: possessive (me, you) and demonstrative (this, that). In order to arrange objects in various locations, participants read instructions that include "this," "that," "me," and "that". The object's location must then be remembered. The opposing predictions of two possible accounts of language's effect on memory were examined in Experiments 1 and 2: the congruence account and the expectation model. In Experiment 3, the potential mechanism of attention was examined. Language had a significant impact on object location memory in all three experiments; Incorrectly, objects in the states of "that" and "you" remember being further apart from objects in the states of "this" and "me." The information supports the expectancy model: The language tags the expected location and combines the actual location, resulting in (wrong) memory for the object's location.
