Natty Bumppo, also known as Hawkeye, is the main character, who is in his middle years and at the peak of his powers. The narrative describes bloody battles with the Iroquois and their French allies, cruel captures, narrow escapes, and retribution. The novel's central themes include Hawkeye's Mohican friends, the last of their tribe, mourning the loss of the unspoiled wilderness and its beauty. Cooper, the first American novelist to achieve international fame, centers his gripping tale of wilderness adventure on this "factual" event. He creates a template for a lot of popular American fiction, especially the western, by heavily referencing the Native American captivity narrative in the United States. In The Pioneers (1823), frontiersman Natty Bomppo had already been depicted as an elderly man. Here, in his middle years, he appears as Hawkeye, a British scout, along with Chingachgook and Uncas, two Delaware Native American companions. After meeting Cora and Alice Munro, British colonel's daughters, Bomppo and his friends spend the rest of the book either rescuing them from captivity, escorting them to safety, or following them through the wilderness. Cooper adheres to conservative racial policies;Even though the book suggests that Uncas and cordial Cora, whose mother is black, might have an interracial relationship, the idea never materializes. Cooper laments the loss of the wilderness and the Native Americans who live there, but it is shown that all of them will eventually succumb to progress, which is typical of the ideology of nineteenth-century America.
